Introduction :

On such auspicious occasion women observe fasts for the health and safety of their husbands. Lot of men have also started observing fasts for their wives. This has made the festival even more special as it signifies love, compassion and understanding.

Karva Chauth is a traditional Hindu festival celebrated primarily by married women in North India, particularly in the states of Punjab, Haryana, Rajasthan, Uttar Pradesh, and parts of Himachal Pradesh. The festival falls on the fourth day after the full moon in the Hindu calendar month of Kartik, which usually corresponds to October or November in the Gregorian calendar. Karva Chauth is observed with great reverence and devotion as women fast from sunrise to moonrise for the long life and well-being of their husbands.

The rituals of Karva Chauth typically begin before sunrise with women partaking in a pre-dawn meal called "sargi," which is prepared by their mother-in-law. Throughout the day, married women abstain from food and water, refraining from even a sip of water until they sight the moon in the evening. The day is spent in prayer, meditation, and socializing with other married women who gather together to perform rituals and share stories. In the evening, women dress in their finest attire and adorn themselves with jewelry, henna, and other traditional adornments before breaking their fast after sighting the moon. The fast is traditionally broken by observing the moon through a sieve and then offering prayers to the moon, followed by consuming water and sweets offered by their husbands. Karva Chauth celebrates the bond of love and commitment between husband and wife, and it is also seen as an occasion to strengthen familial ties among married women in the community.

Guide Celebration:

Unlike spontaneous or informal celebrations, a guided celebration is orchestrated with a specific purpose or agenda in mind. It may involve a designated leader or host who directs the flow of the event, ensuring that participants engage in specific activities, rituals, or ceremonies according to a predefined schedule or program.

  4. Celebration Process :

The pooja of Lord Ganesha takes place on this day for the longevity and wellness of the husband. In some regions, there is also a tradition of the unmarried women to keep fast for their future husbands. A married woman worships Lord Shiva and his family in the evening before the moon rises. In some parts of India, there is also a ritual of offering Daan or Dakshina to the Brahmins on this day. On this auspicious day of Karwa Chauth, women must break their fast with only satvik food and avoid eating non-veg. An item like the moon should not be distributed. Therefore, you should not give someone rice, milk, curd, or white objects.

Women should observe a strict nirjala fast, beginning from sunrise and ending after the moon is sighted. They should pray for their husband's long life, do the Karwa Puja, read the Karwa Chauth story, pray to Goddess Parvati, Lord Shiva, Lord Ganesha and Lord Kartikeya, and worship the moon.

Women break their nirjala fast in the evening on Karwa Chauth after sighting the moon. They look at the moon through a sieve or a transparent cloth, pray and make offerings (Arghya), and drink water from their husband's hands to break the vrat. After this, they have food prepared at home.
